How to Hold a Body
Production year: 2026

Role: producer / director / editor
This project takes the historical practice of footbinding inancient China as its point of departure, tracing how violenceagainst women’s bodies has shifted from overt physicalcoercion to more concealed and internalised forms of bodilydiscipline in contemporary society. Under the combinedinfluence of capitalist markets, consumer culture, and socialmedia aesthetics, bodily management increasingly appearsas “free choice” and “self-improvement,” while remainingdeeply embedded in gendered power structures and systemsof social evaluation. Within this process, women internalise discipline as selfdemand, engaging in continuous self-surveillance and bodilyadjustment in order to secure social recognition and accessto resources. Anxiety, insecurity, and compliance coexist, while resistance often remains confined to the level ofconsciousness. Through performance, sound, and movingimage, the project reconstructs the continuity betweenhistorical bodily violence and contemporary self-discipline,revealing a condition of the body that appears free yetremains persistently regulated.
